Wilson Student Wins Prestigious Princeton Race Relations Award

March 1, 2016

Congratulations to Wilson senior, Davona Watson, for being recognized by Princeton University as a regional award winner of "The Princeton Prize In Race Relations." This prestigious honor goes to high school students who distinguish themselves by promoting harmony, understanding, and respect among people of different races and whose efforts have had a significant, positive effect on race relations in their schools and communities. As an award recipient, Davona will receive a $1,000 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Princeton University to participate in the Princeton Prize Symposium on Race. This 3-day symposium will include workshops with other award recipients from high schools around the country, as well as current Princeton students, faculty and alumni.

Davona won this award based on her essay responses to a variety of race relation questions posed by Princeton University and her record of achievement at Wilson High School. Davona is currently enrolled in Wilson's Law Magnet. Some of Davona's noteworthy accomplishments at Wilson include being President and Founder of the Black Student Union Club, and President and Founder of the Wilson Women Empowerment Club. Davona is also a member of the United Students Club, the Law Leadership Council and is a Peer Counselor at Wilson's College Corner. Davona also enjoys dance and playing basketball.

When learning of her award, Davona says she was surprised, but felt good for her opportunity to help and inspire others. Davona is very grateful for the support of her parents and many teachers, but most especially to Mr. Roura for recommending her for this award.

Davona is interested in Psychology, Anthropology and Social Work and has applied to a number of well known colleges. We have every confidence that Davona will find success in life and continue her quest to foster and improve race relations in our society.
